Issued in 1996 by the Monetary Authority of Brunei Darussalam, this 1 Ringgit banknote features the portrait of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei, wearing a royal military uniform. The background includes intricate geometric and floral Islamic patterns in blue and violet tones, symbolizing the country’s cultural heritage.
The reverse side displays a stylized view of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, one of Brunei’s most iconic architectural landmarks, located in Bandar Seri Begawan. Surrounding the image are ornate arabesque elements and traditional Islamic design.
Printed on hybrid polymer-paper substrate, the note incorporates advanced security features such as a watermark of the Sultan, security thread, microtext, latent image, and UV-fluorescent fibers. It also includes raised print and color-shifting ink in the denomination area.
The note measures 141 × 69 mm and has remained one of Brunei’s most visually distinctive low-denomination banknotes.
