The 1 Tolar 1990 banknote was issued by the Bank of Slovenia as part of the provisional currency introduced shortly before Slovenia’s independence from Yugoslavia.
The obverse features a detailed illustration of a honeybee, an important national symbol representing Slovenia’s long tradition of beekeeping and its close connection with nature.
The reverse presents a mountain edelweiss flower alongside geometric patterns, symbolizing the alpine flora of the region and national identity.
Printed on cotton-based paper, the note includes fine line engraving and micro-patterns as its main security features.

The first two numbers of the serial give the last two numbers of the year of issue (90360637 = 1990)
On 8 October 1991, the Bank of Slovenia issued provisional payment notes, placing them into circulation as a temporary currency. There were ten different denominations of these notes (1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000). All were issued on 8 October 1991 except for 5000 unit note which was issued 27 May 1992. Provisional payment notes went out of circulation on 6 November 1992 (1000), on 30 June 1993 (1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, 500) and on 1 February 1994 (5000).
In September 1992, the first tolar banknotes were placed into circulation, followed by coins in January 1993.
Kranjec was secretary of the Bank of Slovenia from May, 16th. 1990 until May, 8th. 1991.
