The 5 Tolarjev 1990 banknote was issued by the Bank of Slovenia as part of the first provisional issues introduced before the country’s independence from Yugoslavia.
The obverse depicts a detailed image of a trout, representing Slovenia’s rich natural freshwater environment and biodiversity.
The reverse features an edelweiss flower, a symbol of alpine flora and national heritage, accompanied by geometric security patterns.
Printed on cotton-based paper, the note incorporates fine line engraving, microtext, and watermarks to deter counterfeiting.

The first two numbers of the serial give the last two numbers of the year of issue (90360637 = 1990)
On 8 October 1991, the Bank of Slovenia issued provisional payment notes, placing them into circulation as a temporary currency. There were ten different denominations of these notes (1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000). All were issued on 8 October 1991 except for 5000 unit note which was issued 27 May 1992. Provisional payment notes went out of circulation on 6 November 1992 (1000), on 30 June 1993 (1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, 500) and on 1 February 1994 (5000).
In September 1992, the first tolar banknotes were placed into circulation, followed by coins in January 1993.
