Historical Background
Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson (1923–2001) was a Belizean journalist, politician and statesman who played an important role in the country’s political development.
Goldson was one of the longest-serving members of the Belize House of Representatives, became the country’s first Leader of the Opposition, and was the first Belizean statesman to address the United Nations. He was later awarded the Order of the National Hero, Belize’s highest national honour. www
The choice of Goldson for the new currency was highly significant. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, the Central Bank chose to move away from portraits of the British monarch and instead honour Belize’s own National Heroes.
As of the design’s approval, only two people had received the Order of the National Hero: Philip Goldson and George Cadle Price. Both therefore appear across the new 2025 banknote family. www
