Historical Background
José María Morelos y Pavón (1765–1815) was a priest, military commander and one of the principal leaders of the Mexican War of Independence.
After the death of Miguel Hidalgo in 1811, Morelos emerged as one of the most important leaders of the insurgent movement. His military campaigns brought large areas of southern Mexico under insurgent control.
Morelos also played a major political role. In 1813, he presented the famous Sentimientos de la Nación, outlining principles including independence from Spain and popular sovereignty.
He was captured by royalist forces and executed in 1815, but became one of Mexico’s most celebrated national heroes. The city of Morelia, represented on the reverse of this banknote, was renamed in his honour in 1828.
