Malaysia 1 Ringgit Tuanku Abdul Rahman 1998 Pick 39b UNC Banknote

The Malaysia 1 Ringgit 1998 Pick 39b is part of Malaysia’s third banknote series, which introduced a substantially more modern visual identity to the Ringgit.

The denomination retains the traditional portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, while the reverse celebrates the country’s natural heritage with a dramatic view of Mount Kinabalu.

Predominantly blue and measuring approximately 120 × 65 mm, the note represents an interesting transition in Malaysian currency design at the end of the 20th century.

Historical Background

Tuanku Abdul Rahman (1895–1960) was the ruler of Negeri Sembilan and became the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong of the Federation of Malaya following independence in 1957.

His portrait established a tradition that continues on Malaysian banknotes today. Rather than changing the portrait to depict each successive monarch, Malaysian Ringgit notes continue to use the image of the country’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The banknote belongs to Malaysia’s third series, introduced beginning in 1996 under the theme “Wawasan 2020” (Vision 2020). The designs emphasised Malaysia’s economic development while incorporating important cultural and natural symbols.

  • Portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman
  • Hibiscus, Malaysia’s national flower
  • Bank Negara Malaysia logo
  • RM1 / Satu Ringgit denomination
  • Geometric security patterns
  • Serial numbers
  • Governor’s signature

The redesigned series adopted the abbreviation “RM” for Ringgit Malaysia, giving the note a distinctly more contemporary appearance than the previous 1 Ringgit issues.

Reverse

The reverse features:

  • Mount Kinabalu
  • Mountain landscape of Sabah
  • Wau Bulan, the traditional Malaysian moon kite
  • Bank Negara Malaysia logo
  • RM1 denomination
  • Decorative and security patterns

At 4,095 metres, Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Malaysia and one of Southeast Asia’s most recognisable natural landmarks.

Located in the state of Sabah on the island of Borneo, it forms the centrepiece of Kinabalu Park and gives the 1 Ringgit denomination a strong connection with Malaysia’s natural heritage.

Security Features

The P-39 series incorporates several anti-counterfeiting features, including:

  • Tuanku Abdul Rahman portrait watermark
  • Security thread
  • See-through registration device
  • Intaglio printing
  • Raised printing
  • Microprinting
  • Fine-line security patterns
  • UV-reactive security elements
