Argentina 1 Centavo 1972 KM 64 UNC Coin

The Argentina 1 Centavo 1972 KM 64 is a vintage circulation coin from the early 1970s, issued during the period of the Peso Ley 18.188.

With a denomination of just 1 Centavo, the coin represents the smallest monetary unit of this Argentine currency system and provides collectors with an accessible piece of the country’s complex twentieth-century monetary history.

Preserved in uncirculated condition, this example retains the appeal of an original coin that has not experienced normal circulation wear.

Historical Background

Argentina introduced the Peso Ley 18.188 on 1 January 1970, replacing the previous Peso Moneda Nacional.

The conversion was:

1 Peso Ley = 100 Pesos Moneda Nacional

The new Peso was divided into 100 Centavos, making this 1 Centavo coin equal to one-hundredth of a Peso Ley.

Argentina experienced substantial inflation during the following years, which rapidly reduced the usefulness of low-value denominations.

The Peso Ley itself was eventually replaced by the Peso Argentino in 1983, at a conversion rate of 1 Peso Argentino for 10,000 Pesos Ley.

Obverse

The obverse carries the official Argentine design associated with the denomination and period, accompanied by national inscriptions.

Its simple design reflects the functional character of Argentina’s everyday circulating coinage during the early 1970s.

Reverse

The reverse displays the 1 Centavo face value together with the date 1972 and decorative elements belonging to the series.

The clearly displayed denomination makes the coin representative of the lowest-value units of the Peso Ley system.

The Peso Ley 18.188

The Peso Ley 18.188 takes its name from Argentine Law No. 18,188, which established the new monetary unit.

It remained Argentina’s currency from 1970 until 1983.

The period is particularly interesting to monetary-history collectors because Argentina’s accelerating inflation ultimately resulted in several successive currency reforms during the 1980s and early 1990s.

Coins such as this 1 Centavo illustrate the beginning of that monetary cycle, when very small denominations could still be issued for circulation.
