Historical Background

Brazil declared independence from Portugal on 7 September 1822, becoming an independent empire under Dom Pedro I.

Throughout the nineteenth century, the country experienced major political transformations, including the abolition of slavery in 1888 and the proclamation of the republic in 1889.

Brazil’s modern coinage commemorates several important personalities associated with these historical developments.

The three coins in this set feature figures connected with different stages of the country’s political evolution:

  • Tiradentes: an early symbol of resistance to Portuguese colonial rule.

  • Dom Pedro I: the first emperor of independent Brazil.

  • Deodoro da Fonseca: the military leader who became Brazil’s first president.

Together, these portraits provide a concise overview of important chapters in Brazilian history.

Obverse

Each coin features a portrait of an important personality from Brazilian history.

5 Centavos – Tiradentes

The 5 Centavos coin depicts Joaquim José da Silva Xavier (1746–1792), commonly known as Tiradentes.

He participated in the Inconfidência Mineira, an unsuccessful movement against Portuguese colonial rule in 1789.

Following his execution in 1792, Tiradentes eventually became a national symbol of Brazil’s independence movement.

10 Centavos – Emperor Pedro I

The 10 Centavos coin features Dom Pedro I (1798–1834), Brazil’s first emperor.

He proclaimed Brazil’s independence from Portugal in 1822 and ruled the country until his abdication in 1831.

His portrait commemorates a central figure in the establishment of the independent Brazilian state.

25 Centavos – Deodoro da Fonseca

The 25 Centavos coin depicts Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca (1827–1892), the military leader who proclaimed the Brazilian Republic on 15 November 1889.

He became Brazil’s first president, serving from 1889 to 1891.

His portrait represents the transition from the Brazilian Empire to the republican system of government.

Reverse

The reverse of each coin displays its respective denomination:

  • 5 Centavos

  • 10 Centavos

  • 25 Centavos

The designs incorporate the year of issue and stylised graphic elements characteristic of Brazil’s second family of Real coins.

Although the coins share a common design language, their different sizes and finishes help distinguish the denominations.

The Brazilian Real

The Brazilian Real (BRL) was introduced on 1 July 1994 as part of the Plano Real, an economic stabilisation programme designed to address Brazil’s prolonged inflation crisis.

The new currency replaced the Cruzeiro Real and became a major milestone in the country’s monetary history.

One Real is divided into 100 Centavos.

In 1998, Brazil introduced its second family of circulation coins, featuring redesigned denominations and portraits of important historical figures.

The coins in this set belong to that modern currency family.

Historical Personalities on Brazilian Coins

Brazil’s second family of Real coins provides an interesting overview of the country’s political and cultural history.

Different denominations feature individuals associated with major national developments, including independence, republicanism and cultural achievement.

The 5, 10 and 25 Centavos coins are particularly interesting because their portraits represent three different stages of Brazilian history.

Tiradentes symbolises the early independence movement, Dom Pedro I represents the creation of independent Brazil, and Deodoro da Fonseca represents the establishment of the republic.

For collectors, these designs transform everyday circulation coins into miniature historical commemorations.
