Historical Background

South Africa introduced a redesigned family of banknotes in May 2023, updating the series featuring Nelson Mandela that had originally been launched in 2012.

The redesign retained Mandela as the principal historical figure while introducing refreshed wildlife imagery, improved accessibility features and updated security elements.

The series includes five denominations: 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Rand.

Each denomination features a different member of the Big Five, a group of animals closely associated with South Africa’s natural heritage.

The 100 Rand banknote features the African buffalo, an important symbol of the country’s wildlife.

Obverse

The obverse features a portrait of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president.

Mandela’s image symbolises the country’s transition from apartheid to democracy and his contribution to reconciliation and national unity.

The design incorporates the denomination of 100 Rand, together with official inscriptions and security elements.

The updated 2023 series retains Mandela as the central figure, continuing the design tradition introduced in 2012.

Reverse

The reverse features the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), one of the famous Big Five animals.

The buffalo is a powerful and distinctive species found across parts of sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa’s protected wildlife reserves.

The reverse design celebrates the country’s biodiversity and the importance of wildlife conservation.

The buffalo motif also connects the banknote to South Africa’s broader series of wildlife-themed currency designs.

Nelson Mandela: South Africa’s First Democratic President

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa.

He became one of the most prominent leaders of the struggle against apartheid, the system of institutionalised racial segregation enforced in South Africa during much of the twentieth century.

Mandela joined the African National Congress and became involved in political activism against apartheid.

In 1964, he was sentenced to life imprisonment following the Rivonia Trial.

He spent approximately 27 years in prison before being released on 11 February 1990.

His release marked an important milestone in South Africa’s transition towards democracy.

In 1993, Mandela and F. W. de Klerk jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize for their contributions to ending apartheid peacefully.

Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994, serving until 1999.

He died on 5 December 2013, leaving a legacy associated with freedom, reconciliation and human rights.

The African Buffalo

The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is one of the most recognisable large mammals of sub-Saharan Africa.

It is known for its powerful build, curved horns and social behaviour.

African buffaloes typically live in herds and inhabit grasslands, savannas and woodland environments.

They are an important part of South Africa’s wildlife ecosystems and can be found in major protected areas, including Kruger National Park.

The buffalo is also one of the Big Five, alongside the elephant, lion, leopard and rhinoceros.

Its appearance on the 100 Rand banknote celebrates South Africa’s natural heritage.

South Africa’s 2023 Banknote Series

The redesigned 2023 series combines Nelson Mandela’s portrait with the country’s iconic wildlife.

Denomination Main colour Featured animal
10 Rand Green Rhinoceros
20 Rand Brown Elephant
50 Rand Red Lion
100 Rand Blue African buffalo
200 Rand Orange Leopard

Together, these five denominations form an attractive thematic collection featuring the Big Five.

The 100 Rand African Buffalo is an important component of this modern South African banknote family.

The South African Rand

The South African Rand (ZAR) was introduced on 14 February 1961, replacing the South African Pound.

The currency takes its name from the Witwatersrand, the region associated with South Africa’s historic gold-mining industry.

One Rand is divided into 100 Cents.

The Rand is issued by the South African Reserve Bank, established in 1921.

Over the decades, South African banknotes have featured national symbols, historical figures and wildlife imagery.

The introduction of Nelson Mandela’s portrait in 2012 represented a major development in the country’s modern currency design.

The 2023 series continues this tradition with updated artwork and security features.

The Big Five in African Numismatics

The Big Five originally referred to five large African animals considered particularly challenging to hunt on foot.

Today, the term is more commonly associated with wildlife tourism, conservation and Africa’s natural heritage.

The five animals are:

  • African elephant

  • African lion

  • African leopard

  • African buffalo

  • Rhinoceros

South Africa’s modern banknote series celebrates these animals through detailed wildlife illustrations.

For collectors, the five denominations provide an opportunity to assemble a complete thematic collection combining African wildlife and monetary history.
