The 1 Cedi 1970 banknote was issued by the Bank of Ghana following the transition from the Ghanaian pound to the cedi.
The obverse features a portrait of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President and a symbol of Pan-Africanism. Surrounding decorative patterns reflect Ghanaian art.
The reverse shows farmers harvesting cocoa, highlighting cocoa’s central role in Ghana’s economy as the country’s leading export product.
This note represents the early years of independent Ghana’s economic identity.
