The Mauritania 5,000 Ouguiya 2011 Pick 21 banknote was issued by the Central Bank of Mauritania on 28 November 2011 as the highest denomination of the final series of the old Ouguiya (MRO) before the currency reform of 2018. Historical Background
The 2011 series represented the last generation of Mauritanian banknotes before the introduction of the new Ouguiya (MRU) on 1 January 2018, when the currency was redenominated at 10 old Ouguiya = 1 new Ouguiya. As the highest circulating denomination of the old currency, the 5,000 Ouguiya played an important role in everyday transactions during the final years of the MRO. Today it has been demonetized and remains highly collectible.
