The 1000 Pesetas 1971 (issued 1974) banknote was printed and circulated by the Banco de España during the late Franco era.

The obverse features the portrait of Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599–1660), the famous Spanish Baroque painter, court artist to King Philip IV and one of the most important painters in Western art history.

The reverse depicts Las Meninas, Velázquez’s most celebrated masterpiece, painted in 1656 and today housed in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.

The watermark shows the portrait of Velázquez.

José Echegaray y Eizaguirre (19 April 1832 – 14 September 1916) was a Spanish civil engineer, mathematician, statesman, and one of the leading Spanish dramatists of the last quarter of the 19th century. He was awarded the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature “in recognition of the numerous and brilliant compositions which, in an individual and original manner, have revived the great traditions of the Spanish drama”.

The Bank of Spain Building (Spanish: edificio del Banco de España) is the main headquarters of the Bank of Spain. Located in Madrid, it lies at the crossing of the Calle de Alcalá and the Paseo del Prado.
