The 5000 Pesetas 1979 (issued 1982) banknote was released by the Banco de España as one of the highest denominations during Spain’s late 20th-century peseta series.
The obverse features the portrait of Juan de la Cierva (1895–1936), the Spanish engineer and inventor of the autogyro, a precursor to the modern helicopter, symbolizing Spain’s contribution to aeronautics.
The reverse depicts an early autogyro in flight, highlighting the technical innovation and pioneering spirit of de la Cierva’s work.
The watermark shows the portrait of Juan de la Cierva.

Juan Carlos I (Juan Carlos Alfonso Víctor María de Borbón y Borbón-Dos Sicilias, born 5 January 1938) is a member of the Spanish royal family who reigned as King of Spain from 22 November 1975 until his abdication on 19 June 2014. In Spain, since his abdication, Juan Carlos has usually been referred to as the rey emérito (‘king emeritus’) by the press.
