First released in 1981 by the Central Bank of Brazil, this 100 Cruzeiros note belongs to the second Cruzeiro series. The obverse displays two mirrored portraits of Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias—the 19th‑century marshal celebrated as Brazil’s “Patron of the Army.” Delicate red‑violet guilloché patterns frame the images and the denomination.
The reverse presents a nineteenth‑century battle scene inspired by the engraving Villa de Queluz, echoing the Duke’s military career; soldiers on horseback and foot charge across the field beneath the legend “Cem Cruzeiros.”
Printed on cotton paper, the note incorporates a watermark of the Duke of Caxias and fine micro‑printed text. It contains no security thread. Dimensions are 154 × 74 mm. The issue circulated until the Cruzeiro was replaced by the Cruzado on 27 February 1986.
