Issued in 2006 by the Bank of Canada, this 5 Dollars banknote is part of the “Canadian Journey” series. The obverse features a portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the seventh Prime Minister of Canada, along with the Coat of Arms of Canada and the West Block of Parliament Hill.

The reverse shows Canadian children enjoying winter sports such as hockey, tobogganing, and ice skating, with an excerpt from “The Hockey Sweater” by Roch Carrier in both English and French.

Security features include a holographic stripe, color-shifting thread, watermark, tactile marks for the visually impaired, and fluorescent fibers under UV light. The note is printed on cotton-based paper with enhanced durability.

Obverse

Texts in English and French. On the left side, the issuing institute and the coat of arms of Canada with a vertical holographic stripe. The portrait is that of Sir Henry Charles Wilfrid Laurier, statesman, Canada’s seventh Prime Minister from 1896 to 1911 and the first Francophone to accede to this position. In the centre is a front view of the West Block of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa with a legend to his right. Below the legend is the note’s face value “5” accompanied by a watermark with the portrait of Sir Henry Charles Wilfrid Laurier and above the legend a Canadian flag. The multicolored printing is dominated by blue/yellow.
