Issued by the Banco Central de Venezuela in 1987, this commemorative 20 Bolívares banknote marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of General Rafael Urdaneta, one of Venezuela’s most important independence leaders and a close ally of Simón Bolívar. Although commemorative, it was released for circulation and is today highly appreciated by collectors for its historical theme.
The obverse features a detailed portrait of General Rafael Urdaneta in military uniform, surrounded by ornamental guilloche patterns and the denomination in Spanish.
The reverse depicts a naval battle scene from the Battle of Lake Maracaibo (1823), a decisive event in Venezuela’s independence, along with the national Coat of Arms and classical decorative elements.
