Indonesia 1000 Rupiah Lake Toba 1992 (2000) Pick 129i UNC Banknote

The Indonesia 1000 Rupiah Pick 129i belongs to a long-running Bank Indonesia design first introduced in 1992 and subsequently produced with annual date varieties through 2000.

This particular P-129i is the 1992/2000 variety. The original 1992 date forms part of the issue, while the second date appears after the printer’s imprint; on P-129i this is 2000. Real Banknotes

The design is strongly focused on Indonesian geography and culture. Lake Toba, one of Sumatra’s most spectacular landscapes, appears on the front, while the reverse depicts the traditional stone jumping ceremony of Nias Island. Greysheet

Historical Background

The 1,000 Rupiah design was issued by Bank Indonesia from 1992 through 2000. Each annual printing is differentiated by its second date and assigned a separate Pick suffix, running from P-129a for 1992 to P-129i for 2000. PMG Notes

The note’s imagery provides a fascinating introduction to two very different parts of Indonesia.

Lake Toba (Danau Toba) is an enormous volcanic lake in northern Sumatra. The reverse moves west to Nias Island, famous for the traditional Fahombo or stone-jumping ceremony, in which participants leap over tall stone structures.

Obverse

The obverse features:

  • Aerial view of Lake Toba
  • Indonesian Coat of Arms, Garuda Pancasila
  • Bank Indonesia inscription
  • Seribu Rupiah denomination
  • Large 1000 numerals
  • Multicoloured security underprint
  • Printer’s imprint with 2000 date

The deep blue design is dominated by the aerial landscape of Danau Toba, giving the note a distinctive appearance among Indonesian banknotes of the period.

Reverse

The reverse depicts:

  • Traditional stone jumping on Nias Island
  • Stone wall used for the jump
  • 1,000 Rupiah denomination
  • Bank Indonesia inscriptions
  • Detailed geometric patterns

The scene is explicitly identified on the banknote as “Lompat Batu Pulau Nias”—stone jumping on Nias Island.

Rather than depicting a political figure or government building, the two sides therefore combine an Indonesian natural landmark with a distinctive cultural tradition.

Security Features

The P-129 series incorporates several security elements, including:

  • Portrait watermark of Cut Nyak Meutia
  • Security thread
  • Repeated BANK INDONESIA inscription within the security thread
  • Microprinting
  • Fine-line security patterns
  • UV-reactive elements
  • Detailed multicoloured underprint
  • Serial numbering

The watermark is particularly significant because Cut Nyak Meutia was an Acehnese resistance figure who became recognised as a National Hero of Indonesia. Numista
