The Malawi 50 Kwacha 2024 is a newly introduced circulation coin featuring one of Africa’s most recognisable animals: the hippopotamus.
The coin is dated 2024, but the Reserve Bank of Malawi introduced the new 20 and 50 Kwacha coins into circulation on 24 April 2026. They are intended gradually to replace the equivalent heavily used banknotes, although the notes continue to circulate as legal tender. MBC

2024 — the date actually appearing on the coin.
2026 — the year the coin officially entered circulation.
For UNCNOTE, I would therefore catalogue it primarily as 2024, while adding “Issued 2026” to the title or description so collectors understand why this apparently 2024 coin is a new 2026 release. Numista
Why Was It Introduced?
The Reserve Bank of Malawi converted the 20 and 50 Kwacha denominations from banknotes to coins because the notes were subject to heavy everyday use and deteriorated rapidly.
The central bank explained that coins can last approximately 10–20 years, making them more durable and economical than frequently replaced low-denomination banknotes. MBC
