Mozambique 1000 Meticais Eduardo Mondlane 1991 Pick 135 UNC Banknote
The Mozambique 1,000 Meticais 1991 Pick 135 banknote was issued by the Banco de Moçambique on 16 June 1991 during a period of economic reform following the adoption of Mozambique’s new constitution. Printed by Thomas De La Rue, it honours Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane, the founder of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) and one of the country’s national heroes.
Presented in UNC (Uncirculated) condition, this attractive banknote is one of the most collected pre-reform issues of the old Mozambican Metical.
Historical Background
The 1991 series was issued while Mozambique was transitioning from years of civil conflict towards peace and economic recovery. The banknote celebrates the country’s independence movement by portraying Eduardo Mondlane and the historic flag-raising ceremony on 25 June 1975, when Mozambique became independent from Portugal. The note circulated until the old metical was replaced by the new Metical (MZN) and was officially demonetized on 31 December 2012.
