The Brazil 1 Cruzado Novo 1989 Pick 216b is a particularly interesting transitional banknote from one of the most turbulent periods in Brazilian monetary history.
Rather than printing an entirely new 1 Cruzado Novo note immediately, Brazil used existing 1,000 Cruzados banknotes and applied an overprint indicating their new value of 1 Cruzado Novo.

1 Cruzado Novo = 1,000 Cruzados
The original 1,000 Cruzados denomination therefore became exactly 1 Cruzado Novo.
Historical Background
Brazil experienced extremely high inflation throughout much of the 1980s and early 1990s, resulting in repeated changes to its national currency.
The Cruzado (Cz$) had replaced the Cruzeiro in 1986 at a rate of 1 Cruzado for 1,000 Cruzeiros. However, inflation continued to accelerate.
On 16 January 1989, another reform introduced the Cruzado Novo (NCz$) at:
1 Cruzado Novo = 1,000 Cruzados
Existing banknotes were temporarily adapted through overprints while new Cruzado Novo designs were prepared.

5,000 Cruzados → 5 Cruzados Novos
10,000 Cruzados → 10 Cruzados Novos
