Issued in June 2017 by the Central Bank of Brazil as part of the current Real series, this 5 Reais note features the national bird, the Rufous-bellied Thrush (Sabiá-laranjeira), on the obverse. The bird is perched amid branches, set against stylized wave patterns and a subtle map of Brazil. The design incorporates the Brazilian coat of arms and text in raised print for accessibility.
The reverse depicts a representation of a marine ecosystem, highlighting aquatic biodiversity with two fish species—golden naiad fish (Nematolebias whitei)—swimming amid underwater plants. The note is printed on cotton-based paper and includes modern security features such as a see-through Brazilian flag window, a latched number “5”, a watermark of the thrush, a windowed security thread, microprinted text, raised tactile markings for the visually impaired, and UV-fluorescent fibers.
The banknote measures 140 × 65 mm and retains the color scheme used across the current family of Real series notes.
